Shirley Phyllis Ahhaitty Gokey was last seen May 20th, 1978 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Her body was discovered on May 27th, 1978 northeast of Shawnee, Oklahoma. Her death was ruled to be caused by natural causes but her family believes she met with foul play and are still searching for answers in her case.

Shirley, who was of the Kiowa Tribe, was last seen when released from jail in Chandler, Oklahoma. She’d been recently arrested for public drunkenness. Her body was found at 5 pm in a wooded area just off Moccasin Trail Road about 3 1/2 miles east of SH 18 by two boys. Initially spots on her forehead and chest were believed to be gunshot wounds but were later said to be caused by decompensation. Tests indicated she likely died on May 21st or May 22nd. Investigators couldn’t tell if Shirley had been sexually assaulted.

Shirley was born September 5th, 1934 to Walter Ahhaitty and Irene Yellowfish in Lawton, Oklahoma. She attended Lawton HS. Shirley was married to Leon Elmer Gokey in 1960 and they had one child.
