On April 24, 1995, the partial skeletal remains of a woman were found by a law enforcement officer when he noticed scavenging birds clustering along the side of a road in a rural part of Caddo County. According to the officer, he noticed portions of human remains protruding from a shallow grave. These remains became known as Caddo Jane Doe.

The medical examiner determined the woman had been stabbed in the chest and her hands, feet and head were all removed from the body. In 1996, after searching the area , a skull was found roughly a mile away. After the discovery of the skull, the case went cold.

Decades passed until March 2022 when the OSBI identified the remains as 20-year-old Katrina Kay (Burton) Bentivegna of Midwest City, Oklahoma. The OSBI Cold Case Unit, including criminalists in the Biology Unit at the OSBI Forensic Science Center, submitted Bentivegna’s DNA to Parabon Nanolabs in March of 2021. Parabon submitted the resulted back to OSBI in August of 2021 with potential genetic matches.

Katrina moved to Oklahoma in 1993 from Colorado, and married later that year having one son with her husband. A few months before her body was discovered (in 1995) her husband filed for divorce. It is unknown if there are any suspects in her murder, or where her case stands today, only that we know it remains unsolved. Katrina had never been listed as missing in NaMus or any other national database a far as we know. It is unknown if she was ever reported missing by her family.

Her son stated “there have been many unanswered questions over the past years, but now I have closure in knowing what happened to my mom.” 29 years later her case remains unsolved. If anyone knew Katrina Bentivegna or has any information about her murder, contact the OSBI at (800) 522-8017, or email them at tips@osbi.ok.gov.
