On January 9, 2013, someone shot and killed Sarah Marie Stouffer, 35, in her Lawton, Oklahoma home. She dropped her kids off at school at 8:45 a.m., and her family started searching for her after she missed a meeting. Her father, a Tillman County Sheriff’s deputy, discovered her body.
Sarah had a tumultuous relationship with her soon-to-be ex-husband, Phillip McCoy, who had recently violated a protective order she filed against him in December. She was also the primary witness in a federal firearms charge against Phillip. According to police reports, Phillip had previously kidnapped Sarah, tied her up, pointed a gun at her, and threatened to kill her. Police and court records also reveal that Phillip McCoy had filed for legal separation Nov. 19 stating they had been experiencing turmoil in their relationship as far back as March 2012, when Sarah alleged Phillip had thrown a picture frame at her, shoved her and kicked her. McCoy was arrested and charged in municipal court for a misdemeanor count of domestic abuse. McCoy pleaded guilty.
Detectives found Sarah’s abandoned car about five blocks away from her house, at 19th and Hoover. They secured her house for evidence collection and processed the abandoned car. They also obtained a warrant to search Phillip’s truck for evidence related to Sarah’s murder. Authorities have not released the details of the evidence discovered in both searches.
Despite her marriage to Phillip McCoy, authorities listed her under her maiden name, Sarah Stouffer, and buried her using that name.
