On May 31, 1958, Carol Ann Batterman was waiting for a bus outside the Crown Motel in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at 3:35 p.m. She intended to catch a bus to the nearby Naval Air Technical training center, where her husband was employed. They had planned to travel to Norman together to search for an apartment. However, she never boarded the bus, and no one has heard from her since. She was just 19 years old.

Carol had been staying at the Crown Motel with her husband, 18-year-old Dennis E. Batterman. Both were natives of Westchester, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago and had been high school sweethearts. They had married just two weeks before her disappearance. Carol had written a letter to her parents the night before she vanished, expressing her happiness in her marriage. Strangely, she left behind her luggage, clothing, makeup, jewelry, and $100 in cash in their motel room. However, it’s believed she may have had up to $35 in cash on her person at the time she went missing.

An eyewitness reported seeing a gray pickup truck, possibly a 1953 Ford, pull up to the curb near Carol shortly before her disappearance. Carol was seen standing beside the open door of the truck, engaged in conversation with the driver. The driver was described as a male, approximately six feet tall, with a slender build. He was dressed in khaki attire and wore a large Western-style straw hat.

The witness briefly looked away and when they looked back, they had discovered that both Carol and the truck had vanished. However, it remains unclear whether this truck had any connection to her disappearance, as no one actually saw Carol enter it.

Authorities suspect that Carol was abducted against her will, and her husband Dennis is not considered a suspect in her disappearance. In a newspaper interview in 1961, Dennis expressed his enduring hope that Carol might one day return, allowing them to resume their life together.

Carol was last seen wearing a beige suit, high-heeled shoes, a yellow Proviso Township High School class of 1956 ring with a black stone on her right hand, and a wedding band with thirteen engraved stars and “DB to CH -5/17/58” engraved on the inside of the band. She was also carrying a small white purse. To this day, Carol’s case remains unsolved.
